Week 1

October 18, 1997

Arrived at SYD 6:40am. Baggage didn’t!! I was afraid I'd have to be naked the whole 6 weeks......hehe Eric wishes he was that lucky!!! Eric met me at the airport with a bouquet of Australian flowers and a big smile!!! :o) We are so glad to be together again.

We drove over Sydney Harbour Bridge on the way home from the airport and it is beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!! It seems really weird to sit on the wrong side of the car, going down the wrong side of the road, but my main thing is I constantly want to readjust his rearview mirror coz it looks funny at that angle. I pretty much wanna close my eyes when he makes a turn coz it looks like we are heading into oncoming traffic!

Sydney Harbour Bridge

He gave me my engagement ring when we got home and it is beautiful!!! I can't quit staring at it, and I've only gotten to show it to Pete, the landlord, so far. I got to meet Josephine and the fish and they are getting along fine with me. Eric made fried rice for lunch and spaghetti Bolognaise for supper.

October 19, 1997

Woke up at 4:30am. Eric fixed fried eggs, bacon, and vegemite on toast for breakfast among other things. ;o) Haven’t formed an opinion of vegemite yet. My bags got here today!! The wait for them to arrive took up a large part of the morning and afternoon, but it gave Eric a chance to play some guitar for me.

We ate at Jackaroo’s in Manly, I had a Steak and cheese with capsicums and Eric had Satay chicken. Yum!! I went to Sydney Harbour. It is sooooooooo beautiful!!!!!!!!!
We took a Ferry from Manly to Circular Quay (pronounced Circular Key) which brings you right between the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. It was beautiful!!! We then went and exchanged my money for Aussie notes. I felt sooooooo rich!!! hehe And so much like I had Monopoly money!!!

Circular Quay

We walked around to the Opera House, which is so impressive!!!!!!!! It is huge and beautiful!!! And BTW, the white tiles that cover the top of it........are ceramic tiles like in the kitchen or bathroom!! hehehe I suggested spraying it with Tilex if they need to clean it, I'm sure the Au government will be pleased with my suggestion and make me a diplomat or something!! hehehe The Opera House was really wonderful though, we will be going back there. And we will also be going to the Royal Botanical Gardens which are right down there by the Harbour.

We went to Cole’s in Manly. And walked up and down the corso and went to Manly beach. And I tried A Tim Tam!! hehehe I wonder who ate all the others??

Ok, Now for some weird Aussie things I've seen........It looks funny to see a Tire store that has Tyre written on the sign. It's weird to see a speed limit sign that says 90. There are traffic circles everywhere, or roundabouts as they are called here, but they aren't like the big one in Alexandria, they are at intersections and are small and are used to make u-turns etc. Hershey Bars are sold here for $1.29 a piece and are in an imported from the USA rack along with Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, Baby Ruth bars, Hershey's kisses and a few others that I can't think of right now. They do have Kitt Katts and a few others though that aren't imported so they are priced better. Kellogg's Rice Krispies are called Rice Bubbles. They also have Rice Bubble Treats. Coke cans are bigger here 13.5oz. Bell Peppers are called Capsicums. It's also hard to imagine it being nighttime for y'all when it's daytime here. I'm used to the thought of it coz of Eric, but being here makes it seem weirder.

October 20, 1997

Eric fixed me eggs and bacon for breakfast. Eric went to work and I stayed home and talked to Dad and Shawn.

Eric came home early and we drove past Long Reef, Collaroy and Narrabeen Beaches we then went to Warriewood and ate fish and chips and calamari. It was REAL windy!!! We sat in an area that blocked the wind from us and ate. We then walked out on the head through a bush trail. The view was amazing!!! Out on the Warriewood head there are cliffs. We then drove up through Mona Vale and Newport and down onto Bilgola Beach. Bilgola Beach has lots of Palm trees on the way down to it. We went on through Avalon and then out to Whale Beach and around the corner of the headland to the spectacular view up to Palm Beach and Barrenjoey Lighthouse.

We drove along Palm Beach and then back along the Pittwater side of Palm Beach to Bilgola Plateau and I met Freda and Wal at their house. They were GREAT!!!!!! We had a really nice visit and Eric let me smell the Lemon-scented gum tree leaf and a regular eucalyptus. I got to see Muscat.......he looks bigger in person than on the web!!!!!

Amy at Warriewood Headland

When we came home, Eric fixed chicken in plum sauce and fried rice. It was really good!! I tried Twisties (like cheetos) and Nestle violet crumble bar which is kinda toasted marshmallowy tasting, but it’s honeycomb.

I have seen Mobil, BP, and Shell gas stations that we have too. Different ones are Ampol and Caltex. Petrol is .74c a liter. Burger King is Hungry Jacks. The toilets have a small flush or big flush button and you wouldn’t wanna flush while you were sitting down!!!!!!!!!!!!! It’s kinda like a geyser.
